Green 17 Tour 2013 feat. Flogging Molly, Mariachi El Bronx & Donots

The Boise Weekly Critic's Pick …

Flogging Molly broke onto the scene at a Los Angeles pub called Molly Malone's back in the early '90s when frontman Dave King debuted his brand of Celtic punk: songs about growing up in Dublin with Irish instrumentation and punk intensity.

King pairs his recollections with an exuberant spirit, and the music effervesces with ardor, especially when played live.

"We're the kind of band that [fans] see us together performing live, and the feeling they get gives them something to remember the shows by," said mandolinist Bob Schmidt. "With us, they're as big a part of the show as we are. That energy they supply us, we try to redouble it and send it back to them and we toss it back and forth."

flogging molly - Speed Of Darkness Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: While some people have panned this album for the large amount of slower songs on it, I personally think the way this album is structured perfectly. Inspired by Dave and Bridget's new hometown of Detroit, it perfectly captures the angst, sadness and hopefulness the town now goes through on a daily basis. Opening - and title track - "Speed Of Darkness" sets the tone for the effort. While it rocks harder than most of the songs on here, it doesn't feel out of place. "Revolution", the second s......

Flogging Molly - Speed of Darkness (from hour)

For some (Irish or not), it's a shame that St-Patty's Day is only once a year. Fortunately, in the meantime, fans of Celtic punky folk can listen to their records from The Pogues, Kingston, ON's The Mahones and, of course, Irish-American band Flogging Molly. Dave King's six-guys-and-a-girl crew got a brand new CD out, their fifth studio release, featuring a punk rock intention coupled with trad-folk delivery and instrumentation. On top of a rock lineup we have lots of fiddle, banjo, spoons, mand......

flogging molly - Whiskey On A Sunday Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: The sound is the typical Flogging Molly sound. If you ahve never heard anything from Flogging Molly, you will discover that they are truely unique with their Irish-infused Rock. The DVD Documentary was filmed over a period of two years and in several nations across the globe. Dave King tells of how he grew up in a very poor urban area of Dublin, Ireland; but there was always music in the house, which ultimatly influenced him into becoming the great musician that he is. It's drinking music......

Flogging Molly - Speed of Darkness (from spin)

Relocating from Los Angeles to recession-plagued Detroit, Flogging Molly tap directly into the areas working-class anger, but stay in their sonic comfort zone. On this fifth studio album, the group use violin, accordion, and such to make stomping originals feel like traditional Celtic tunes, while on "The Powers Out" and "Rise Up," rabble-rousing frontman Dave King champions defiant hope amid crushing desperation. But the overly smooth production undercuts his righteous fury, suggesting the grou......

Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness (from theaureview)

There's something about Flogging Molly that always attracts me to them. The catchy Irish folk ditties that symbolize the honest working man. The bands latest offering Speed Of Darkness continues the trend that has summed up Flogging Molly's entire career. Good, solid songwriting and a passion for the music they create. With that combination it's hard to not be allured by fiddles, accordions and Dave King's nasally accented vocals and even harder not to succumb to their Irish charms. This is a mu......

flogging molly - Float Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: I preface this review by saying that Flogging Molly are one of my, if not the, favourite bands. I got into them via a friend who lent me Drunken Lullabies and Within A Mile of Home. I have since heard and bought all studio albums, as well as Whiskey On A Sunday and Alive Behind The Green Door. I know my stuff. So onto the album. Requiem For A Dying Song is exactly what I love Flogging Molly for - powerful, political calls to arms set against a melody you can dance like an idiot to. Requie......

Flogging Molly - Speed of Darkness (from punknews)

While I have been a Flogging Molly fan for about a decade now, I have gone through the same hem/haw scenario over every album post-Drunken Lullabies (2002). More specifically, I'm waiting for this band with a very niche sound to start sucking. While I would never dismiss Flogging Molly's Irish folk punk as a novelty, I certainly understand why others would. FM has dropped four great records so far, but there's only so far they can take their amped-up Pogues worship before they hit a wall. Speed......

Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness (from themusicfix)

Dedicated to the working class, Flogging Molly's latest effort sees the band tackle the state of the economy. Perhaps their most mature work to date, the septet confront the touchy subject with honest, hard-hitting words, whilst providing a beacon of hope for those that are yet to overcome their struggles, whether financially or personally; 'Revolution' and closer 'Rise Up' are both prime examples of this activist attitude. Musically, the group's punk-rock and Celtic-infused concoction is as fre......

flogging molly - Drunken Lullabies Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: This album just sounds amazing. I never thought I'd hear such a unique sound...a blend of punk rock and Irish drinking songs. It's got a great happy vibe to it, and once you hear it you don't wanna turn it off. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are top notch. The singer, Dave King, knows how to write lyrics for different types of songs...the slow ones have gripping emotional lyrics, and the faster ones have happy (and at times funny) ones. His Irish accent just adds to the vibe you get......

flogging molly - Swagger Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: The sound is a strange mix of scottish folk music, blues, and punk. A soft mandolin could be used to accompany a distortion-laced guitar riff with screaming vocals. The sound is a great break from the average rock, with a great mix of musical styles that somehow strangely works. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are fantastic and clever in many cases - in the first song, Salty Dogs, the singer screams "You're smellin' like a salty dog, back from hell where you belong." The softer songs......

Flogging Molly - Speed of Darkness (from theywillrockyou)

Irish-American Celtic punk band Flogging Molly recently released Speed of Darkness, their fifth studio album. Produced by Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Avett Brothers), Speed of Darkness runs the gamut from straight up punk rock songs and mid-tempo acoustic numbers to blue collar anthems, infused with banjos, fiddles, and accordion delivered by main man Dave King and his all-star supporting cast of Bridget Regan, Dennis Casey, Matt Hensley, Nathen Maxwell, Bob Schmidt and George Sch......

Floggin Molly - Live At The Greek Theatre (from Altsounds)

Playing to your hometown crowd will always be that little bit more special than playing anywhere else, even if it's an intimate pub, but if you're Flogging Molly, then it'd be crowds of thousands at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The unique celtic-esque rock sound of Flogging Molly is a creation that emerged after Dave King, Dublin born and bred frontman, acquired the talents of guitarist Ted Hutt, bassist Jeff Peters, and fiddle player Bridget Regan. They used to play regularly on a Mond......

Flogging Molly - Speed Of Darkness (from musicreview)

I've partied to Flogging Molly quite often - in fact, FM have actually got me laid before (true story - but I will not get into the finer details, because I might get slapped or killed as a result of any admission). So, it's with a heavy heart that I have to announce that the Celtic punkers have failed me with Speed of Darkness. Yes, you read that right the first time: they've failed me. The cheeky energy of previous albums has been removed and replaced with a more pop sensitive, "safer than dry......

flogging molly - Within A Mile Of Home Review (from ultimate-guitar)

Sound: Within A Mile Of Home is exactly what anyone is expecting from Flogging Molly; Irish Punk enhanced by outside instruments. The album itself is not as good as Drunken Lullabies, however. This CD is more a flashback of Swagger. This is not a bad thing at all. The songs are still addictive, and an overall excellent sound, still putting off a vibe of Irish pub mayhem. If you like Flogging Molly, you will like this CD. // 10 Lyrics and Singing: King's voice is more refined in this album, as ar......

Flogging Molly - Speed of Darkness (from reviewrinserepeat)

Between the raucous vigor of the Dropkick Murphys and refined folk-punk of Flogging Molly, fans of Celtic-tinged music have had more than enough to satisfy their distinctive desires over the past decade. Serving as a more composed and less-inebriated version of the Dropkick Murphys (as some may refer to them), Flogging Molly has found their way into the hearts of thousands; crafting exuberant, yet relatable blue-collar anthems ever since their inception. Looking past the obvious asset of havin......
