First Light is on the horizon. Opio and Pep Love of the famed Hieroglyphics hip hop collective have joined forces to illuminate the day and expound upon the Hiero theme of random acts of musical collaboration. First Light gets its cue from the braggadocio and conceptual characteristics that were commonly expressed in the early nineties "Golden Era" of hip hop. But, at the same time, their way of displaying an affinity for and a loathing of the apathy and debauchery that permeates today's pop culture is poetically contradictory.

A charismatic emcee from the Bay Area, Z-Man is best known for his unusual flow, extensive slang dictionary, and comical, party-centric tales. He got his start as a member of 99th Dimension, but also put in time with local underground favorites like Sacred Hoop and Gingerbread Man. After building up a sizeable rep releasing numerous cassette-only albums and performing around Northern Cali, Z-Man signed with Hieroglyphics' label to put out his most high profile LP to date, 2004's Dope or Dogfood.

L*Roneous... the name alone is revered within circles of hip hop purists, globally. This is NOT simply a rap act. L*Roneous is a special talent with an impeccable vision. Based in northern California's bay area, a community rich in art and culture (with a renegade/rebel spirit) L*Roneous is not only a representative of that, he is a reflection of it. This is not a glitz and glamour campaign. The music is the message. The message is the music. just listen... "each song has a life of its own and is without flaws, no joke."

Artist Bio:
After two records with acclaimed West Coast hip-hop underground group Co-Deez, Otayo Dubb is going solo. “It’s a whole new beginning for me,” says the Oakland-based producer/MC. Co Deez’ original blend of hip-hop and soul with what Dubb calls “an alternative edge” made them standouts in the talent-laden but slept-on Bay Area underground scene (typified by such artists as Lyrics Born, Blackalicious, Hieroglyphics, the Mighty Underdogs, and Zion-I). Despite being somewhat overshadowed by the much-hyped but ultimately short-lived hyphy movement, Co-Deez and their regional peers carved out a stylistic niche which has much in common with traditional hip-hop, yet reflects a West Coast/Bay Area perspective. As a solo artist, Dubb hopes to continue in that vein and uphold the Bay’s independent legacy while attracting wider recognition for his musical and lyrical skills. Dubb calls his solo material “more straightforward hip-hop” than the music he made with Co-Deez (who remain active as a group). He describes his rap style as “thoughtful, but not preachy … a little bit of conscious, a little bit of street.” Though he’s had his share of run-ins with the law, he doesn’t go out of his way to be ’gangsta.’ As he says, “I’m not trying to paint negative pictures. There’s nothing we haven’t heard about that side of life,” he explains.

Artist Bio:
In 1985, Michael Marshall was the lead singer for a loosely organized musical collective known as the Timex Social Club. They were bound together simply; they started with the limited ambition of creating a song or two for the types of multicultural parties that they frequented. But in less than a year, they would have a top-ten single and be loudly announcing the birth of a new musical form: hip-hop soul. Neither Michael nor the other members had any way of knowing that in less than two decades this sound would become far more than just the sound of their parties, but sound of the planet, the soundtrack to everything from fast food to vacation. And today, though Mary J. Blige and P. Diddy collect a disproportionate share of the credit, it was years earlier that the form first came to national prominence. This came with the release of the hit single “Rumors” and was cemented during the summer of 1986 as the song and a nascent musical form gained traction in the national consciousness. Radio programmers were perplexed. It was urban and had an edge. But it wasn’t rap. The song charted into the top ten and gained momentum on radio. Suddenly, the band was invited to tour with Run D.M.C. and LL Cool J. A second single, “Thinkin About You” advanced the trend. Finally, after a hastily put together tour and a long summer on the road, “Mixed Up World” would be the final hit for Timex. The members of the collective were headed for an ugly divorce. And legal wrangling left Michael in limbo. The band that had all but invented hip-hop soul would be left out of its first mainstream successes. And the singer who brought the harmonic structures and knack for counter melody made famous by Marvin Gaye and Prince would be forced to wait it out as his music became the soulful counterpoint to grunge in the early 1990s.â¨
